How does jonas prove himself worthy

Later on in the novel when Jonas learns about memories and the truth about his community, he decides to stop taking the pill Unhealthy newborns and the elderly are at risk of being released from the community. The government tells everyone that the elderly will be released when they are a certain age. The people of the community do not understand that the older people willed be killed against their will because they are too old to be taken care of. Unhealthy newborns are cared for but if they are not a certain amount of pounds they will be given an injection that will put them to sleep forever.
